We see quite a few MacBooks for logic board repair, many are the result of liquid damage. We wanted to write about this one as we've seen a common failure point with liquid damage on the newer MacBooks with M1 chip. This MacBook came in and wouldn't power up. We confirmed the issue with an amp meter as the device was pulling 0.00 amps and wasn't switching from 5 to 20 volts.
Once we opened the device we found visible corrosion on the board so we cleaned the board in an ultrasonic cleaner. After the ultrasonic cleaning we did more testing and found it was missing voltage on the PP3v8_AON rail which was the result of a bad Renesas Power IC(U5700). We've found this chip commonly dies with liquid damage and it doesn't seem to matter whether the liquid damage/corrosion is near this chip. We replaced this chip and a few other components that were damaged by liquid and the MacBook was back up and running normally.
