A repair we see quite often and is our featured March repair of the month, is the blown image filter on Macbooks!
This particular repair is something we see on a daily basis. There are many ways that this component can fail. Liquid damage, not unplugging the battery when plugging the screen LVDS cable in, or certain power surges that shock the system and overload the circuitry. As you can see in the picture above, the filter to the left of the connector has completely blown. The component is not even there. The voltage was so extreme that it either melted completely and fell off the logic board, or it welded itself to the board. In this, the component had actually welded itself to the board and had to be pryed off. When this happens, we usually have to rebuild the circuit lines within the logic board itself to recreate a connection.
We rebuilt the necessary padding on the logic board so that both sides of the filter would make connection. After we rebuilt the connection, and soldered the new filter in place, we placed UV protection coating over the image filter. This helps keep the component in place. When the padding that keeps the filter in place gets damaged, and needs to be rebuilt, the strength of the hold needs to be reinforced. That is the job of the UV protection coating.
After all of the necessary components were repaired, the Macbook image was restored.
